Frequently Asked Questions

A certified lock always has the ART quality mark, stating the number of stars of the rating category and the 4-digit approval number (4****). It is always listed as approved on the website.

The more stars a lock has, the better it protects against theft. A lock with 5 stars has the highest protection level.

It’s best to do this through your bicycle dealer, a key service or the supplier of the lock.

That depends on the conditions of the policy. Good reason to read it over closely.

This means that the lock is no longer approved by ART from the given date. The reasons that approvals expire can be e.g. withdrawal by the manufacturer, the lock no longer meets our requirements, the authorisation holder has not complied with his or her obligations, or the lock is no longer being produced or imported.

If you took out the insurance cover when the lock was still ART approved, the validity of the approval remains for the entire period of the insurance policy. Even if the approval expires in the meantime.

This means that the lock is no longer being produced as of that date, and that ART approval will expire at the end of the certificate’s validity period.

No, this has no effect on your insurance, as long as you don’t take out a new policy.

No, this is reserved for suppliers and manufacturers of locks.

NAZ means “Nicht Absiehbare Schlussel” and “R” means “Retaining” and both refer to models where the key stays in the lock when the lock is open. This is a requirement of Dutch insurers for ART approved locks that are permanently mounted on a bicycle.

Frame locks are supplied abroad (the same model but NOT NAZ or NR) where the key can be removed at any time (open and closed position). These versions are therefore NOT ART approved and cannot be used to take out bicycle insurance.

A certificate is valid for 3 years from the date of issue, generally speaking. At the end of these 3 years, the approval holder can decide whether to renew the certificate or not. If the approval holder wants to renew the certificate, it can be renewed by another period of 3 years after selected tests have been carried out.

The approval number consists of 4 digits (4***) and is stated on the ART label/print.

ART approved locks have been extensively tested by an independent laboratory for durability, weather resistance, environmental resistance and attack resistance.
